I can see a lot of problems with the Metamagic Item infusion and these feats in general, but considering that the piling on of metamagic feats also piles on additional spell level adjustments it really doesn't make the Twin Spell + Maximize (a +7 total) that outlandish. Let's face it you can do it to a 2nd level spell at best - because of the rule about NOT being able to push the effective level past 9th.

Also, someone brought this to my attention recently... Metamagic Item (ECS 113) and Metamagic Scroll (Magic of Eberron 99) are nearly identical in every way - save that the duration is different. Was the Metamagic Item infusion supposed to have the same duration ("1 round/level or until used") as Metamagic Scroll? That alone would make the infusion more reasonable AND in line with the other infusion that does the same kind of thing - it also would answer all questions about "breaking" the game as it were. A single boosted use of a spell trigger item with no additional cost in charges to the wand (which only makes sense if it IS a single shot - how does a 3rd level infusion (or spell for that matter) "power" the wand to cast spells much higher than it was created with for MORE than a single shot?! It's clear from every other example of applying metamagic feats to items (the Artificer class ability (ECS 32) and the Metamagic Spell Trigger feat (Complete Mage 45)) that they require additional charges to power the item to perform those effects (effectively saying it takes more power from the wand to duplicate the effects of a higher level spell (which is basically what a metamagic feat creates when you think about it - you cast the spell as a higher level and get higher level type effects/power out of it).

So to assume a wand with a single infusion/spell boost (even a 3rd level one) could sustain a metamagic feat's effects on it's use just doesn't pass the good old "common sense" test. It also doesn't follow the common practices and precedents in all the other examples of apply metamagic feats to items (of which there are precious few - I've seen 4 I think (the two infusions, the feat, and the class ability - all mentioned above)). So if that Metamagic Item infusion is supposed to last for the entire duration, no matter who uses it and how many shots they take/charges they spend, it either needs to have additional charges spent like the class ability and feat or it needs to have the same duration as the lower level infusion which limits it to a single use - because the power to perform that metamagic effect on the casting IS coming from the infusion-level-slot being used to allow the wand's effect(s) to be boosted appropriately. A metamagic feat isn't like a skill focus where you select a single spell and then that spell is forever altered, and a wand created without a metamagic feat doesn't have the power needed to put out those kinds of powerful effect - wands are limited use & limited power items by the very nature of their construction and having a set number of charges. It's like a battery... You can probably play with the wiring and tinker with it (the infusion does this) and even add a little something more (the metamagic feat does that), but to expect it to be able to do it for any length of time without outside power to sustain it (the infusion would do that - for the one use, or at least up to 3 spell level slots (I'd say 4, since the first level infusion allows for 2 spell level slot adjustments and below - 4 would keep consistency with both infusions allowing the infusion level +1 spell level adjustment as the limit) worth of uses, if someone wanted to keep track of such things and allow it to have multiple uses that way - that would balance the infusion just the same as a single-use (since most people are talking about using Maximize or Twin Spell, etc anyway).).

Or, the infusion in the ECS could have just missed the errata team's scouring of the book and simply needs a "or until used" added to the duration of the infusion. That would fix the problem, make it just like the other infusion and make the two consistent to each other (and I know part of that "or until used" is that it's being set onto a scroll... BUT the point is that it's allowing a single use for similar amount of power that is required for a single spell to be cast with the metamagic feat - if you were to create an item with a metamagic feat you'd have to do it at a higher base spell level, so the logic of a single use makes sense given the rest of the game's rules).
