When I first got into Spelljammer, it was after reading an adventure in Treasures of Greyhawk (The Neogi Nest?) where the end prize is a spelljamming galleon.
From there, I picked up the first boxed set, then the rest, and I got a few supplements. All of it just captivated me. I don't think it was so much the setting as it was the concept. It was just something I really digged.
I got out of SJ for a while, as life went on and new interests came, but then I found this really great fan site - Beyond the Moons. Suddenly, I found my "Spelljammer mojo" again, and life was good.
Since that time, I've been sort of on-again, off-again.
I was enthused to see Spider Moon, despite some of the naysayers. Unfortunately, the debate on Spider Moon between fans of the old setting and new fans really got to me. Still, I enjoy Spider Moon, and that's all that matters.
I've also been blessed with Airships, from Bastion Press (which I think is just nifty). Also picked up Aether and Flux (which is okay), and the Aerial Adventure Guide series.
Treasure Planet especially has my SJ mojo going for me. I think that movie is one of the best that Disney has ever produced.
I've had some thoughts on what I would like to see as well. First is that Spelljammer be a setting in and of itself, while allowing for one to add it onto any setting. Make it a genre of its own that can be added to other genres.
Secondly, I see Spelljammer as a multi-era game.
1. Age of Exploration - I see this as the SJ version of Enterprise, where people are just getting out into the stars. Everything is new.
2. Modern Era - This is more like classic SJ, where everything is at its peak in a fantasy setting.
3. Future Era - Think Treasure Planet. Mix fantasy with a smidge of futuristic technology, and you've got it.
I'm not sure where I stand with Spelljammer anymore. I would love to see a full-sized 3e sourcebook, but I doubt we'll see that. I'd love to see something that would make me go "wow" like I did when I first saw SJ. Honestly, I've not seen a 3rd party SJ-like product do that yet.
If I had the time, I'd work up something myself. Yet my involvement with Dragonlance has me hopping these days.
*sigh*
Okay, sorry if I rambled there and sorry if I came across as ranting. I guess I just wanted to share my thoughts on SJ.
