I'm semi-new to Spelljammer (in that I just started playing Spelljammer with the 3e publication in Polyhedron). I've been DMing in the CS for almost 3 months now, and I've noticed countless inconsistencies within the article (case in point: "Archelon: Helm: major..." (pg 39, issue 151 Polyhedron) "A major helm can power a ship of up to Colossal size..." how does a major helm power a ship larger than Colossal? Also, the cut-out for the Archelon is 20X90, while the description of the Archelon says it is 30X240? My players have pointed out other things they've wondered about, and I've made judgement calls based on my knowlege, but I'd like to know what information is considered canon? I'm also curious about why the cargo capacity on the ships is so small? Again, my example: Archelon: cargo: 20 (pg 39, issue 151 Polyhedron), its dimensions, I'll remind you, are 30X240. The Sailing Ship from the DMG (page 150-151, Dungeon Master's Guide) reads: "it can carry cargo up to 150 tons" yet its dimensions are only 20X75-90. Why is a ship so much smaller capable of carrying so much more cargo? From my understanding human vessels (as the Archelon) are built to carry cargo as well as fight, so the incredibly tiny cargo holds make no sense, that would barely hold enough food for the people onboard (given sustained travel) leaving no room for ACTUAL cargo. The Archelon APPEARS to be about 16 stories tall, about half of those have no windows, I would assume that is the cargo/bilge area (not combined clearly), that creates a space 80X240X30 (using the measurements given and assuming each level is 10 feet high for the sake of easy math) that is 576,000 cubic feet of cargo space...if you make half of that bilge you still have well over 200,000 cubic feet of cargo space...it seems like that would hold WELL more than 20 tons of cargo). Please explain these things to me, I'm immensely confused. Thanks, please e-mail me that info ASAP as I'm starting a second party on sunday and would like to have answers for them.
