Friends,
I read the new 3E rules in the magazine, but I was wondereing if clerics retain their powers in other spheres, even if the god isnt there. |

With the publication of Manual of the Planes, I would say the answer is no, Clerics are not hampered from one Crystal Sphere to another, unless a Game Master create such.

I was under the impression that large zones where certain character classes were useless were out of fashion, since it's simply no fun.
DM: For the next three campaign sessions, we're going to be in a place where your character can't do anything usefull, but everyone else is at full power. Cleric Player: I think I need a new hobby... |

As it is no fun to have a character losing his powers, and as it is no fun having a priest havin full power in a zone controlled by beings in opposition with his deity, maybe some compromise should be searched for.
You may imagine that the powers are given to the priest by the god (or an avatar) when he joins the church and that they grow in effect as the characters levels up, without divine intervention. Therefore, he always have his powers. On the other hand, while most spells continue to work, some specific spells may not work everywhere : divination spells for instance might not work if the god or its representatives are not around to answer. Finally, some powers might be diminished in some places. Undead might be more resistant to destruction and turning on the negative plane for instance. So minor modifications, even substantial one's can be used as long as the character remain playable, viable and fun to play. The same can be done for other classes : A universe with limited magic energy, limiting profane magic users powers (all spells would be harder but not impossible to recover, so that a given morning, the day after a very long and tiring fight with a lot of spells used, a given sorcerer could not be able to fully recharge and therefore would have less spells that day). If some gods have access to this distant universe, divine magic user might not be affected. A planet with high gravity (2g or 3g), fighting local monsters (used to this high gravity), fighters and other barbarians would not be very efficient while magic could work almost normally. Another planet with sand deserts and permanent strong wind : a ranger would be useless for tracking. |

Personally, I imagine a cleric as like a cup that a diety can fill with power, whereas a mage seizes power from the world around him. Either class requires great skill and great mental faculties to actually do much with the power. For gameplay reasons, either spellcaster should be able to access that power from ALMOST anywhere.
For example, a good aligned cleric should, IMO, still be able to regain spells even in the demonweb pits... but might fairly be restricted from doing so inside Llolth's spidership itself. Manual of the Planes has some good options for plane wide limiting effects. Impeding magic with the [Good] descriptor on an evil plane accomplished the same flavor as preventing a good cleric from casting, without actually making the character useless. As an example of a "&*! the fighter" area, which I also wouldn't hit my players with, I'd suggest a plane in which no one and nothing has a physical form. Spellcasting works normally, but no one may attack by any sort of weapon. Yuck.... |
