There's not much more to "announce" that isn't said on that page.

The book is an update/system refresh of the original tome. It's not really a "new take" on the original material--much (most?) of the text in the new book is from the original, with some other bits taken from other Dark Matter sources (including Shades of Grey) here and there to fill some gaps.

As you can tell, the new book's smaller than the original--not everything from the original book is in here. In some cases the omissions are obvious (most/all of the Dark Matter critters have already appeared elsewhere, and the new book doesn't reprint the Alternity FX rules stuff from the original, for instance), and in other cases sections were slimmed or eliminated based on their importance to the overall tome.

Honestly, if you already have the original Dark Matter tome, this book probably won't hold many surprises for you. That said, if you enjoyed the original book but are looking for help adapting it to the d20 system, this book would probably come in handy.

And of course, if you never had the fortune to pick up a copy of that wonderful book (and judging by sales, there are an awful lot of folks who haven't had that opportunity...), now'd be your chance to see what everyone's been talking about.

The bulk of the work crafting the new book (from the various bits and pieces) was performed by Chris Perkins, whose RPG qualifications I'm sure I don't need to repeat here.

I don't really have any more insight than that, nor do I have any knowledge of d20 Spectaculars (other than what you've already determined--that it's no longer on the current publication schedule).
